Sony is showing a prototype of a new field recorder at
the AES meeting in NYC. The recorder is called the
PCM-D1. This machine may be the reason people are
speculating that Sony will discontinue minidisc
recorder production.
PCM-D1 features include:
-- digitizes at rates up to 24/96
-- stores files in WAV format (ATRAC too?)
-- built-in 4GB flash memory
-- removeable Memory Stick Pro flash memory
-- USB 2.0 port
-- transfers files to Mac or PC
(no need to use Sonic Stage software)
-- power from 4 AA batteries
-- shaped to be held in one hand during operation
The PCM-D1 has two built-in microphones. In the photos
I saw, I couldn't see a jack for an external mic. I
hope there's a 3.5mm jack for mic input on the
side of the unit.
The most unusual feature of the PCM-D1 is a pair
of large -analog- meters mounted at the top of the
case. I expect that these were added to attract
attention, and could be eliminated to lower the
cost of future models.
Competition for the PCM-D1 includes the new
Nagra ARES-M, a hand-held 16/48 WAV recorder
with 1GB built-in flash memory.
