Here's a link to a photo of the new
Sony PCM-D1 announced this week at AES

I read one report that says, in addition to
the built-in mics, the PCM-D1 has a
3.5mm TRS miniplug for mic and line
input.=20
This report goes on to state that the mic
input does not provide "plug in power"
for consumer mics, nor 48V phantom power
for pro mics. So you'll need an external
battery box to power the mics.
The PCM-D1 MSRP is a breath-taking
$2000 USD.
Take away the fancy titanium case and
the analog meters, and Sony could save a
lot of the cost of producing the PCM-D1.
I expect that additional models will be
released at lower price points.
The PCM-D1 faces stiff competition from
Sonosax MiniR2, the Nagra ARES-M, the
M-Audio Microtrack 2496, and the HHB
FlashMic, all of which use a similar
"hold in one hand to operate" design.
