Those well off or "Rich" people will never buy "beginner equipment".
Those people are easy to id as they ask for the best.

I see most "pro" cd's still using mainly magnetic tape media from
years past. It will be years before quality digital recordings are
made to replace many these tracks. It does not take a $1,000
microphone to beat many commercial CD sound tracks out there (no
insult to anyone intended).

In todays available products I can place a beginner in nature
recording for under $125.00 US and have him recording at what the
Nagras real to real recorded with MKH's. This does assume $75.00
budgeted for a used minidisc (currently not a problem). It also
assumes the user has a stereo playback system that can resolve 60db
s/n and that the user had a computer to find the info and edit sounds
with. And it assumes basic knowledge of soldering ones own cables and
mics.

But then being a pilot only takes time, money, and inclination all at
the same time. I understand that, and it is why I am not a pilot.=20
For those people who do not want to invest the effort, a budget of
$500 can supply a good entry level system.

Want the best? OK, more than $15,000 from field to ear for just
stereo.

I still hope to see Nature Recording grow beyond a few, maybe to
numbers that approach what we see as "hunters" today. I hope that
this field as a hobby can show value in our natural resources to
many, and that should be beyond the expectation of making a
commercial product. This is because I can not expect someone to
protect what they do not value, and see no way they can value those
things they have not met. Yes, it is that agenda and imagination
thing getting in my way again.

Rich
