Great! I'm just down in SF and would be happy to either come up for a test
or just lend the mics!

Correct, mono multipattern; the not-field-tested part is partially because
I'm backordered on a Sound Devices (like everyone!) and partially because
I'm still compiling the other requisite gear -- I was doing all
binaural-like recording before so it's a whole new set of gear. (Which
reminds me, I need to hunt down various cables -- do you terminate your
own Tim, or is there a local dealer you work with?)
Actually I'm going to try both Sennheiser's own Rycote-like baskets, and
the DPA windpacs, to see which works better; you can do MS in the latter
but other techniques are a much bigger headache -- although I put an
engineer at DPA up to verifying that with a bit of cleverness you can, in
fact, get two vertically oriented 800s in ORTF on a stereo bar with two
Windpacs.
I have some unorthodox ideas for doing coincident MS/Blumlein in one
hacked-together long blimp actually as well, depending on when you want to
do the test I might have figured that out... :)
A main motivation for getting the 800s (or 80s) was to have a high quality
kit that could be rapidly adapted in the field to different
configurations; figuring out wind shielding that will support quick
changes has of course been the non-trivial part!
And to answer Martyn's question... a one-owner pair blipped used at Sonic
Sense and I had to go for it. :) Might as well jump in to the deep end of
the pool I guess, Walt's comments over the years about never regretting
getting his mics helped. :) Figure when the dollar crashes they're my
nest egg. ;)
