Maybe not, but Doug Oade does. If you buy your Marantz PMD660, PMD670
or PMD671 from Oade, he will rebuild the preamp using quality
components for an extra $125. The result is *much* reduced mic preamp
noise.
When Marantz designed the PMD series, their target audience was court
reporters, speech therapists, and stenographers -- all settings where
close mic placement is the rule. I don't think that they were much
concerned about capturing the song of some sparrow 50 feet away. But
these recorders, unmodified, do produce decent recordings if you keep
the mic preamp gain at a low setting.
A colleague in Venezuela uses the unmodified PMD670 with a Telinga mic
and parabola, and has captured lots of high quality bird
vocalizations. He prefers the PMD670 to his HHB Portadisc, even
though the Portadisc has a quieter preamp, because the PMD670 is
smaller, lighter, and, with no moving parts, more rugged in field use.
It's just the ticket for those all-day slogs through the forest. I
think he'll like the Oade-modified PMD660 I just ordered even more.
