It's worth noting that the new ATRAC3plus (or whatever it's called) has a
high-quality (SP) mode, it's just not the same as the last one. I do think
it has a slightly lower bit rate (256 instead of 292 kbps if memory
serves) but on the other hand the algorithm used is supposed to be
significantly better.

Only time will tell...

Personally I'm not buying any of the new gear until I have confirmation
from an end user that you can indeed upload PCM recordings (via USB) and
convert them to .WAV.  An analog-only limitation I can live with, though I
was very quite excited at the prospects of feeding a highquality optical
digital signal in and just using HiMD PCM as the medium.
