Sony, the company that invented ATRAC, tells us that when using a Hi-MD recorder, PCM recordings are superior in quality to those made with ATRAC3: "ATRAC3plus captures sound quality comparable to CD at a high compression rate, while recording with linear PCM produces uncompressed sound that provides enhanced quality and enjoyment when recording and playing back."=20 http://www.sony.net/Products/Hi-MD/quality.html With a semantic leap of faith, I'll assume that "enhanced quality" in the quote above refers to a more accurate reproduction of the original sound.=20 So when a Hi-MD owner values quality most highly, Sony advises he should record using PCM. When storage space or battery life is more important than quality, then use ATRAC. --oryoki ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ |
