Hello all:
Today I tried something so simple it was radical.

The setup: Last fall, to start college, we gave my son a Clie [SONY] palm
device for his birthday. This spring, he informed me everything he wanted
to do could be done on his cellular phone (!!) and he gave the Clie back to me.

Yesterday I fought with it for a few hours and found out that you actually
CAN transfer files to and from it to your PC. So I use it mainly to keep
all the sedge (Carex) species straight I am learning, by placing keys and
photos and diagrams on it to use as a progressing field guide for myself to
the many New England sedges.

Anyway, today, gathering what might be a new sedge (Eurasian invader) in
Sudbury, MA, by a very busy roadway, I noted that the nearby male
Rose-breasted Grosbeak was in full song. So I hauled out the PDA, NX70V,
set it to "Voice recorder" and pressed record. After the first 30 seconds,
and about five cars had passed by, there was a brief pause in the bg.
noise, and the bird sang. The resulting WAV file was trimmed of the extra
traffic, and is now posted to my web site - with no modification
whatsoever, except it was saved to a new name, as an UNCOMPRESSED WAV file
[the Clie uses ADPCM compressed wav format for everything, YCCHT!]. The
final is about 450 k in size.

Check it out. Of course the mic was meant only for taking notes, etc.
etc. Let me know what you think. I'll show you some sedge photos I took
with it next. ;^)

I send my best regards,
