It is worth remembering that a AD converter is not by itself a field
recorder. It's a hardware component, one of many parts needed. The
question on recorders is about something you might toss on your shoulder
and go out in the field and record with.

The problems of high frequency recording are less in the AD and a whole
lot more in other parts.

Right now, to do this stuff at high quality in the field tends to come
down to packing a computer out there. A very cumbersome solution.

Subject: Surround WMA

For those of you who have the hardware I have posted a small Windows
Media 9 file on my website that is a surround piece. I would be
interested in how well it plays back on other systems, mac/pc/IE/
Netscape, etc. You can let me know off-list so as not to tie up
bandwidth and I'll post a report if anyone is interested.

It is a simple "composed" piece using elements from different
recordings. It is intended mainly to test out this file format. I
have no relation to Microsoft. The dawn chorus is at the NSS workshop
last year and the water is a recording I did in Marin a few weeks ago.

You will need a sound card that supports surround sound with more than
2 speakers on it, though it should play back stereo as well. One
won't hear the rear channels. An inexpensive sound card that deals
with surround is the Creative Audigy series.

Direct link to the file (2mb download, sorry maybe I 'll try to post a
smaller version next week):

Thanks and enjoy,
