Regarding synthesized wildlife sounds, such technology really can be useful
to us nature recordists. Some years ago I heard a fascinating recording by
the English musician David Hindley. He had re-created the voice of an
extinct bird, the New Zealand Huia. This was based on David's careful
research into the species, on written descriptions of the call, and on a
whistled version of the call given by a Maori who remembered the bird
pre-extinction. David Hindley imaginatively recreated the sounds of the
Huia within the New Zealand rainforest of a hundred years ago, and created =
a
beautiful piece of music that was both hauntingly sad and also of
considerable scientific interest.
