Actually, folks, after trying all of the above which we liked at 
various levels, we settled on the MKH40, which really smoothes out 
the stereo field and provides the best surround options we tested 
(with the sacrifice of directionality options from the Mid channel). 
It's also the fave-rave of Skywalker Sound (LucasFilm) folks after 
field testing different ambient mic systems for years.

Again, most of our recordings relate to capturing whole habitats and 
not single species.
