I'd rather do my repairs too, I understand that.

If I remember correctly you got and replaced the chip while they were
still sorting out the problem. So, there probably is a more recent chip
that will fix it. Won't hurt to ask them.

I agree, just never happened to me, I never used it that way. Even with
the portadisc I make a point of making sure it writes the toc
frequently. If not by turning it off, by ejecting the disk.

I always try to think of the possible failure modes and work so I can
avoid them as much as possible.

To some it would seem I make a point of never using a device in the way
it was intended. Drives store clerks crazy if they ask what I'm going to
do with something.
