This is, obviously, the ideal solution, as long as a system can be put
together that does not miss any calls. Otherwise you will have to grind
through all the blank recording one way or another.

Note the use of syncro record with the digital inputs in current MD
won't work the way you need. The syncro looks for a digital audio
stream, and even silence will be that in the setups proposed. It
probably would just run continuously. You will need a threshold
detection system of some kind. Like the Portadisc one. Note the few
times I've tried to use that system it did work, but it's surprising how
often some little blip of sound occurs.
