The HHb Portadisc has both optical and coax digital I/O.

The Portadisc has done ok with the MKH mics I use. I do think that's 
about the limit for it. We are not talking studio or dedicated mic pre.

The Sony MZ-R30's I used before that had pre's that were appropriate for 
the greater self noise of quality consumer mics, like the ECM-MS957. Use 
a MKH with them and I think you would find the pre's intruding some. 
Those pre's were also much more prone to overload than those of the 
Portadisc.
