At the radio station I worked we did the same ; record with a mono
mic and split the signal to two inputs. One of those inputs had a 20
dB pad permanently connected (as an insert).
This way if the main (louder) signal was accidently recorded too
loud, you could always use the other (softer) signal. This way you
always have an unclipped recording.
That is the idea behind it.

We use it because our interviewers are not so good at setting levels,
I guess John uses it because of unexpected loud peaks?
