The 2.5 inch hard discs specified for many new recorders
have a shock rating of 150G to 200G, which really isn't
sufficient for recording on a bumpy road, either. A
solid-state memory unit has a shock rating 10 times
greater (2000G), so it's the best option of the three
for a recorder in a high-shock environment.
In my case, I need a recorder that's rugged enough to
survive being bounced around while traveling to the
recording site. The recording itself is made in as
close to a motionless state as possible. So any of the
three storage media (optical, magnetic or solid state)
would work for me.
