Hi Charles--
It could be other things besides the mic and/or pre. I use mkh's and
the mp2, very often in very low sound level situations. It could be
the way you're equalizing. When soundfile saturation is below 1%, I
don't get very good results with the usual "cut the hiss" approach to
eq. My approach is tedious, but I can try to share it.  What eq
tool(s) are you using?  Would also be useful to know what medium are
you recording onto, how you are monitoring and the playback
situations you are  aiming for. e.g. CD playback at typical living
room sound levels?
