Maybe, but you may pay in lower gain. Unfortunately no free lunch in
this game. I expect there will be many experiments trying to digitize
mics, but until someone figures out how to get rid of the diaphragm it's
probably not going to change it a lot.

There are definite limits and ambiance is where you will meet them. Just
get the best you can out of the equipment.

There are a few mics quieter, though how they'd do for what you want is
another issue. I seem to remember some Rode mics have very low specs.
Maybe Sankin. You'd just have to go to their sites and check.

The other thought is to listen to the self noise and find the mic that
has self noise that will hide the best even though it's audible. That's
a area there is almost no reporting on.

But at best you are only going to get a few dB more.

The whole business of wind screening could use a lot more development. A
lot of it is trial and error now. Some current wind screening introduces
it's own noise from the wind just to complicate it all.
