Martyn,

Your Portadisc software may require updating to the latest software which i=
s
V1.50.
The software version number is displayed briefly on power up in the display=
.

You can either return the machine to an HHB service agent or contact HHB US=
A
and ask them to send you a new eeprom which you can fit yourself if you are
confident to do this.

It is a fairly easy process to change the software eeprom.

Remove the bottom panel.
Remove 4 screws that hold in the main circuit board (next to the mechanism)
and angle the pcb up carefully from the connector side of the portadisc.
Beware as cables are connected underneath - it will be necessary to
temporarily disconnect the flat ribbon cable connected to the front panel.
Locate the socketed EEPROM and carefully & gently remove it by lifting it
with equal force paying particular attention to not bend the pins. Now
insert the new one, making sure all the pins are inserted and the E-prom is
oriented correctly.
Reassemble, taking care to replace all the screws and cables correctly.

When powering on the unit, you should now see "SOFTWARE VERSION V. 1.50"
briefly appearing on the display.

I hope this helps, however if you don't feel comfortable with making this
upgrade, do not hesitate in contacting HHB USA.

Paul, HHB

Subject: [Nature Recordists] Portadisk freeze

For some reason my Portadisk has started to "freeze" when I finish
recording! When I have recorded what I want, the bloody thing sits there
with the screen frozen on the sound bars! Walt, has yours ever done this
before? I cant turn it off with the power down switch, I have to take
the batteries out and then put them back in again, then it goes into its
TOC mode then all is well, this has happened a few times now, I don't
know if this is a coincidence but it only happens with my Telinga
Science attached?! I hate the thought of it going in for repair and
doing away with it until some idiot gets it going again, I have little
faith in repair merchants these days!!

Martyn
