Walt,
Why do you think the MKH 30/40 recording has more high frequency hiss
than the other recordings?
Also, did you have a chance to pair a MKH 30 with a mono mic mounted in
a parabola?

nice selection of examples. I presume that the variation in background
noise
between recordings is mostly due to variations in traffic, rather than
due
to the mike setups themselves.

Here's some mic samples from my foray last week. I took the trouble to
work several mics on a couple sites. All samples are raw, just the bass
cutoff, and with the MS setups decoded to stereo. File sizes vary from
323k to 429k, total of all 11 files is 4 megs. I make no claim this is
the best these setups can do, except for the Telinga I'm still getting
used to them. And, of course mp3 encoding will take away a little. There
is certainly plenty more variation of the stereo for the M/S setups.
First site is a flooded ditch that runs perpendicular to the road out
for 50 yards or so. A house (and it's dog) is 100 yards out. Behind me
are various manmade noises in the distance and some spring peepers
across the road. In the ditch in front of me there are Southern Chorus
Frogs, most are fairly close. And a few half hearted Southern Leopard
Frogs.
The mics for first site:
Telinga Pro V with DAT Stereo mic element. Plugged into the HHb
Portadisc direct. Input attenuation set at -15dB.

M/S MKH-30/40 with Sennheiser suspension and zeppelin, no furry cover.
Powered by and plugged direct into the HHb Portadisc:

M/S MKH-30/60 with same suspension and zeppelin setup. Again direct to
the Portadisc:
http://loscan.home.mindspring.com/S.MS.MKH30-60.mp3
M/S MKH-80/80 with larger 6" zeppelin and suspension. Mid on cardioid
setting. Direct to Portadisc:
http://loscan.home.mindspring.com/S.MS.MKH80-80.mp3
SASS/MKH-110, no windscreen, direct to Portadisc:
http://loscan.home.mindspring.com/S.SASS.MKH110.mp3
SASS/MKH-20, no windscreen, direct to Portadisc:
http://loscan.home.mindspring.com/S.SASS.MKH20.mp3
The second site is a near dried out pond, just shallow water which is
starting to refill it in puddles. It's got quite a bit of tall
vegetation in it that's grown last year while it's been down. In this
area are Brimley's Chorus Frogs, Spring Peepers, and a few Southern
Leopard Frogs. The angle the pond covers from my location is less than
90 degrees. Frogs are from 20' to 150' away. Some distant manmade
noises, mostly behind me.
Mics:
Telinga Pro V with DAT Stereo into Portadisc, with -15dB attenuation:
http://loscan.home.mindspring.com/B.Telinga.DATStereo.mp3
M/S MKH-30/60 same as above into Portadisc:
http://loscan.home.mindspring.com/B.MS.MKH30-60.mp3
M/S MKH-80/80 same as above into Portadisc:
http://loscan.home.mindspring.com/B.MS.MKH80-80.mp3
SASS/MKH-110 as above, into Portadisc:
http://loscan.home.mindspring.com/B.SASS.MKH110.mp3
SASS/MKH-20 as above, into Portadisc:
http://loscan.home.mindspring.com/B.SASS.MKH20.mp3
Note that the samples will not be up indefinitely. I don't have the
space for that. A few weeks at most.
