I'm inclined towards Doug's guess that the plug in power or the power supply of the MD is the problem. I guess I'll have to get it back to Sony. I don't think it's environment noise- that's a familiar problem around here (mainly low frequency distant traffic noise) but the spot in the woods I chose is quiet at 6 am. Coincidentally I was listening yesterday to some recordings I made in 1968 in the Sahara desert on my Uher and I couldn't find any hiss problems on them.....
