Digidesign would love to get you hooked on ProTools ;)

a free, 8 channel version of Pro Tools 5 is available for mac or windows.

Downsides:
-mp3 import/export costs (US$30 I think)
-ProTools does not natively support interleaved stereo files - you
must import/export to/from dual mono.
-mac version only supports soundmanager

Price is right, though.

Click on "Pro Tools Free" at the bottom of the page.
