Another mesh material that's useful is the "plastic canvas" available in
craft stores. It will require some support for any long term use, but
then I'd expect the hardware cloth does not fare that well long term either=
.

PVC pipe cutaway is often used for suspensions as well. If enough
material is left it also will support a wind cover. It may require some
creativity to use it for a X-Y setup.
