A standard rycote zepplin is smaller than 4", you could probably get by
just fine with 3" pipe. That will cut the bulk a bit.

Note that, although a rycote suspension is pretty pricey, the mic clips
for it are not too bad. That can simplify construction if you use Orings
for your elastic.

For my problem with the MKH-816's the hinge point is about 2/3 back on
the mics. That's where the diaphragms are. So I may be able to combine
hinge and handle. The next tricky bit is fitting the wind protection to
such a thing. I was originally thinking a single enclosure around both
mics, which would allow them to be real close together. But two near
independent enclosures with a pivot point would also work.
