I recommend Caig products, Cramolin etc., for spraying mini-phone plugs. The recording level problem could come from having the monitor level too high and the recording level too low. I find a ballpark level setting for digital nature recording is to speak an announcement (date, time, equipment) and set the recording level to moderately high (say -8 FS) with that.
