Indeed, profit is what will get us goodies or not.

That's my guess too. MPEG-4 AAC is available (both decoding and encoding
if you buy Pro) in the Quicktime 6 stuff. And that's PC or Mac. In fact,
the entire MPEG-4 is just the Quicktime coding renamed, it was adapted
as the standard unchanged. I'm going to start experimenting with AAC
soon as I have Quicktime Pro.
My guess is as far as the Mayah that it's likely to be held back. MPEG-1
level 3 is pretty established. We may want AAC, but the great unwashed
hordes won't know it exits or care. So they could end up putting in some
mp3 codec in spite of what we think.
