I once descended something like 3/4 mile underground in a lava tube
at Lava River Caves State Park near Bend, OR. Near its end the tube
begins to fill up with sand and the trail is dug through it until it
just stops in a small, round room about big enough for three or four
people. I was there on a Wednesday on the off season and arrived at the
end utterly alone. I sat down, turned off my flashlight, and realized
that ALL of the noise I heard was in my own head - and you would be
amazed at how much noise that is! I don't know how long I sat there - a
very long time - carefully shutting down all of the noises. I got
almost all of them and it took a lot of patience. Eventually a group of
people came along and snapped me out of it and I left, but I've never
known such peace. I'd recommend it to anyone. Wouldn't be much use
recording it, but I guess you could check your mic's noise floor or
something. :-)
