Hi all,
I just returned from my annual sanity renewal in the high Rockies of
Colorado. I spent a lot of time recording Gray Jays at around 12,000'
(3,660 M). I also spent some disc space on the numerous Prairie Dog towns
around Gunnison, Colorado, having been inspired to do so by Con
Slobodchikoff's work on their calls. (Learn more about Con's work at
http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~cns3/, and I'll be posting more PD sounds soon on
my "Other Animals" page).
Anyway, one of my hikes took me up a 3-mile trail deep into the high
Rockies to a small mountain lake named Lamphier Lake. There I was treated
to utter solitude and quiet. I timed one span of silence (meaning silence
from man-made sound) at just over 15 minutes! That's pretty good these
days. The silence was broken only by the occasional aircraft flying
somewhere overhead, but even it was never intrusive. What a treat!
The rest of the trip was wonderful, too - lots of recording, lots of quiet,=
lots of cool weather (which, if you are from Arizona, is a rarity and a
delight!).
