A quote taken directly today from the LNS pages on recording technique:
"For the present, we cannot recommend Mini-Disc recorders or other
recorders that use data compression, although they do have utility as a
sound storage system with quick access capability for listening purposes."

The link where you can read all about how good cassette is and that quote:
http://birds.cornell.edu/LNS/recordingnature/html/recordingnature_techequip2.html

If you go to the LNS website, and follow the links to Techniques &
Equipment this is one of two pages linked off there.

The same original tests of ATRAC 2 are still there at the bottom of the
page. Putting them in a new page layout did not change the fact that at
this point it amounts to a pack of lies. There is no way this dated
material should have been put back in when they revised their site.

There is a page that's not quite so anti, and is still outdate (and
still anti):
http://birds.cornell.edu/LNS/recordingnature/html/recordingnature_techequip1.html
It also references the same tests from the other page.

Anyone still using ATRAC 3.5 for nature recording? They plan on testing
it someday. (that's the ATRAC of at least 5 years ago, folks). When I
started recording for the 5 year survey that just finished my MD was
ATRAC 4.

If that's very satisfied, I must not understand english. They have
reworked their site, but their equipment recommendation section still is
the same as always. To me satisfied means they use and recommend it.
They don't, not on their website. Cornell only tolerates it barely.

Just another quote, from the page 1:
"The open-reel recorder is still one of the top choices of the seasoned
professional field recordist."
Makes me wonder if they are still packing Nagra's out for their work.
And those that can't afford that they recommend PMD 222's or 430's. This
equipment works, but for someone coming into the field to recommend any
kind of magnetic tape is a disservice.
