It will only run longer. In approximately a ratio of the two capacities.
And, assuming the same charger it would also take that much longer to
charge them. Note there may be higher capacity C cells around, I've not
done a extensive search. That's the size from my usual supplier of AA
cells and while they carry a number of brands, it's not near all.

As long as you observe that same polarity, namely the plus of the
battery set is connected to the tip of the cig-lighter plug, and neg to
the side contact, there would be no problem. Of course, since it's
expecting car voltages, you would want your external bank to be between
12 & 13.6 volts when charged.

>From what I can see, C and D cell NIMH seem to be made in the same max
capacity. Which should make the C cells the better choice for bulk and
weight. I suppose that's why you rarely see a battery pac that contains
D cells.

Note that such a pac can be as simple as a motorcycle gel cell "12 volt"
battery with a cig lighter plug connected to it's two terminals. And
that charged by a low amperage standard charger for cars. I've got
approximately that except it comes in a nice shoulder pac. In my case it
was originally intended to be used with a telescope dew heater. At 10
amp hours, it will run things a fair while. I've not run the portadisc
from it yet, mostly use it to run a auto hand spotlight for spotting
frogs. It's pretty heavy to be carrying far.

One little warning as you get into construction. Don't solder directly
to any batteries that don't have terminals designed for soldering.
Otherwise you may severely damage the cells. You will have to insure
contact other ways.
