Like everyone else I am not in favour of using drones basically anywhere unless by the proper authorities. We have an election coming up in the ACT so I suggest bombarding your local MP with complaints about the use of these things used mostly as toys. Perhaps hire a drone, get a licence and use the thing over their house!!!!!

About 3 weeks ago I came across a drone being used beside the Kambah Pool track (near the first little bridge). Whilst approaching it I was wondering what is that noise, till I saw it and the user. I could not suggest it was disturbing any people or fauna. As for birds to disturb, there were hardly any there in the over an hour of my stroll. I reckon it would probably be a hard case to pursue among the general public or in law that flying a drone would have any actionable consequences on any basis of animal welfare laws, apart from in very specific cases. So I am not surprised that police would not be interested. What excuse could they use and know about to stop someone in that situation? Talking to the person involved to explain the impacts might be a better approach – though you can’t predict what will happen.

The rules about drone use are very simple as is who is responsible for enforcement. It’s all on the CASA website so I’m not going to republish it here.

The bloke in Commonwealth Park was clearly operating in a no fly zone (as a result of proximity to the airport), unless he had a proper permit and commercial aircraft licence. So CASA and Canberra Airport are the best contacts.

The one at Point Hut doesn’t sound like a violation of any drone regulations, but rather is an issue for animal welfare laws.

And the one in Macarthur doesn’t sound like it was outside the regulations unless it was causing a hazard to people.

Drones have to be registered so if you see unsafe flying, photograph it and report it to CASA.

They are down right annoying.

I tried to get someone in authority to stop a bloke in Commonwealth Park sending up a drone over the Flying Fox colony on one of the hottest days 2 years ago at dusk  .

Police are useless it wasn’t their job of course & were bloody rude as well ,CASA a government department had all left to go home on a friday afternoon.

What are the regulations & who administers them ?

Luckily there was a more rational volunteer monitoring the camp than me who eventually convinced the bloke to cease.

There are rules about how close they are allowed to be to people.  I shall try to find them.

is anyone else encountering these annoying machines? Both yesterday and today I've been birdwatching in public parks when someone has come along with a small drone. Yesterday it was a young person - maybe young teenager - using a drone at Point Hut Pond Park - and actually chasing a swamphen with it! The adult with this young person was on his phone the whole time, not watching what was going on.  Today it was a park in Macarthur, and almost as soon as I arrived there was a VERY noisy small drone being operated by a young man. The birds all took off in alarm - rosellas, cockatoos, noisy miners etc. I gave up and left.

The ACT government apparently isn't responsible for drones in the ACT - CASA is, and there don't seem to be any rules about their use in places like suburban parks..
