Just a guess really, but could it be a PB Duck cross with something exotic?

For a long time there was a domestic duck swimming with the PB Ducks in Crace Pond and last year a different domestic duck was associating with PB Ducks in Ginnindera Creek behind our place. The fact that this duck is associating and seemingly paired with a native duck hints to me that it might have a native parent and an escaped domestic parent. Am I way off the mark, my learned COG duck expert colleagues?

As a follow-up to my request last night someone queried the size of the mystery duck, so here is a further email with photos of the black duck & other, as well as a flight shot ....

Julie,

This may help with size. They swam together everywhere, despite lots of other ducks around and they flew off together when no other ducks flew. I am sure they were together.

Hi All,

A visitor to Canberra has sent me these photos and would appreciate comments or information about the  photographed duck.

Hi Julie,

I was in Canberra this week and saw an unusual duck in the company of a Pacific Black Duck. They swam together and flew off together when a fisherman cast his line at them despite seeing me trying to get a photo.

Can you put this image to Canberra Birds forum and ask if they have seen this duck? I presume it’s just a different colour. It was photographed by me yesterday (Wed) at Yarralumla Bay in front of the ADFA Boatshed.

Sorry about the quality of the images.

Thanks for any feedback.

Cheers

Julie
