Hi and happy new year,
A big thanks to everyones congratulations, it was a fantastic year. With an intial goal of 200, I never thought that I would hit 209. However, I would never have gone so well with out the help of the local birding community, so thank you. I would also like to give a huge thanks to Scott Ryan, Alastair Smith, Frank Antram and Peter Milburn for their help throughout the year.
For anyone interested my top bird of the year was bird number 209, Red-necked Avocet (seen at Ford Pond 30/12). For anyone interested on how I recorded my list, every bird seen over the year was posted on birdline and any interesting reports where checked out by the moderaters. All rare birds where also seen by other bird watchers except for my report of a Black Falcon which was question by birdline ACT moderaters.
Looking forward to another great year bird watching
Kind regards,
Brendan Sheean

Subject: Re: [canberrabirds] Big Year 2012 Congratulations and a technical question
I would like to add my congratulations.
I think I may have dibs on the earliest first bird record for the
ACT this year: Cacatua sanguinea fireworksensis directly
overhead at 1 minute past 2012. The technical question is
this: should they be added to my GBS chart?
regards
Con
PS if someone could get Brendan to send me an email I have a
query for him about Wonga Pigeons.

G’day Scott and all,
Do you know what Brendan’s “top”
species were?
Just out of curiosity, are there any
rules or “governing bodies” that vet records for these sorts
of exercises or is the whole thing done on “trust”? I know
when I have done “twitchathons” that there are rules to be
followed, and that teams I have been in have followed these
rules completely. Does anyone know what the OFFICIAL
record is for the ACT, where records of vagrants etc have
been through the rarities committee?
So far my ACT 2013 list is
............... Australian Magpie and Pied Currawong but I
did sleep in this morning – I can hear a Common Blackbird
calling, does that count?. That’s 208 (207 with the
blackbird) to go to beat Brendan ....!!!
Happy New Year all,
Mark
Happy New Year, Canberra
Birders!!
Just a quick note to say a big
congratulations to Brendan Sheean on his first crack at
an ACT 'Big Year'.
I believe his final tally was
209, a very impressive total, & I believe second
only to Milburn for the year.
Well done to all & happy
birding for 2013. Lets hope this year may bring us some
rarities again :-)
