My partner and I saw a white necked heron when walking on the Dowling track on the pinnacle yesterday (Monday). It was on a small farm dam between the track and William Hovell drive at the back of the residence just down from the Dungowan St entrance to the pinnacle.

Today, at approximately 15.00hrs we again saw a White-necked heron at the homestead dam at Strathnairn Homestead Gallery. (off Stockdill Drive, Holt.) It appeared to be alone.
It had a rusty sheen or colouring on some of the wing feathers.
A second look some 45 minutes later showed it had a row of black/dark spots down the centre of the neck. At a different angle the rusty sheen was less noticeable.
It was watching the water intently, probed quickly with its beak and came up with what may have been a yabbie. For some reason it let the creature go.
