No Canberra retailer has a good range of bins suitable for birding. Remember that COG and Birds Australia members can get a discount from Bintel (online store plus shops in Sydney & Melbourne) and The Birding Shop, Melbourne.
I bought my current pair of binoculars from Bintel in Sydney, and
they were very helpful. It's definitely worth trying the various
binoculars in person to see how the look and feel in the hand -
bad ergonomics can spoil otherwise good optics, and what works for
one person may not work for you.

I'm not sure of your price range, but I would definitely look at
the Kowa 8x32BD binoculars. While I wasn't looking at that size,
the pair of Kowa 10x42BD that I looked at were excellent.
