We are probably getting more because somewhere in
their breeding range they are being more successful so there are more to try
their luck here or they are surviving the winter better so there are more
reaching Canberra. Or the region around Canberra is getting worse and more of
those that are about, do find their way here. Can't have anything to do with
numbers of Wattlebirds, as they have always been abundant. Besides what we are
noticing is arrival of males looking for females. We aren't getting breeding
yet. They aren't interested in dependent young Wattlebirds, they may be
interested in Wattlebirds at the egg laying stage. What is interesting is
that broadly speaking the species that the GBS Report shows to have declined are
the summer migrants. The Koel has gone strongly against that trend. So whatever
impact is occurring with so many other species, the Koel is responding
differently.
