Lindsay,
That means they were out of collimation and you should have
taken them back immediately for a refund. In my experience there are very
few places that can reliably and successfully re-collimate a pair of binoculars
in Australia.

I have Steiners and they had a fault when new so I would
advise a simple test before you buy (whatever brand). Check that both
barrels have the same alignement. To do this, place them on a firm base
and focus on a small object say at 50 meters. Then quickly alternate
shutting each eye in turn. If the object moves slightly between eyes then
the barrels are not aligned and eye strain will result.
