Hi Martin and all,
My guess would be N = Native Companion ie
Brolga, O = the picture is definitely of a Casuary but I am sure they meant it
to be an Ostrich, and J = most definitely a Jackass better known as an obvious
Laughing Kookaburra.

bird puzzle
We have purchased an alphabet frieze from the NGA in which each letter
of the alphabet is accompanied by an Australian image - mainly bird or
animal. When we sent this to a german friend, as a gift for her new
baby's nursery wall, she replied that it was "interesting" and
they had "had some nice fun trying to work out how some of the images
link to the letter" they were supporting.
We then paid some more attention to the images and three are in the
attachment. You may like to link the image to its letter (although not
shown E is for Emu etc) and I'd welcome your suggestions. I rate 1 of them
relatively easy, 1 less than easy and have no idea how the bird in the
third links to its letter. As a possible clue the design was done in London on 1902.
