It seems ‘my’ koel is the one based near the
Griffith shops that Nick and others have reported. That means that the
sound I regularly hear is from 500-800m away. This morning it was calling
from treetops on the N side of Jerrabomberra oval.
As to females, this morning I
had a clear view of an adult female flying from a perch in Strzelecki Cres in
the direction of the above male. Before doing so it drew attention to
itself with a low growling sound.
As to what determines
occurrence, surely it is the relative abundance of fruit. At present
there’s lots of ripe prunus about in eg Griffith (ACT) being enjoyed also
by the currawongs. Fruit would also be factor around cherry-growing
Binalong, not to mention Woolgoolga.
