Fred and Heather Allsopp and I were lucky enough to see a Red-backed Kingfisher at the entry to Namadgi NP on Naas Road this morning. Initially alerted by a 'strange call' we investigated and soon confirmed its ID. Please see URL for picture.

Appropriate form will be sent to rarities committee. Wonderful day in the Naas valley apart from my tearing a calf muscle (badly) whilst endeavoring to photograph a Brown Thornbill. I can hear the voices...." You shouldn't be taking photographs whilst blitzing, you should'nt be taking photographs whilst blitzing, you are evil Stuart Harris..." and in all honestly, those voices would be partially right! So, I simply repeated the mantra "Red-backed Kiingfisher, Red-backed Kingfisher" all the way back to Canberra and i feel pretty good.

‘Tis the week of the wader with a Long-toed Stint
observed by Stuart Cooney and I at Jerrabomberra Wetlands this morning. The
bird was loosely associating with the Bar-tailed Godwit. I will prepare an unusual
bird report, which if accepted by the rarities committee, will be the second
record for the ACT; the first being in December 2002.

Alastair
