Thank you for clarification of where you stand, Geoffrey. My objection to
acronyms is that it cuts out any tentative birders or correspondents from
any discussions. Timorous folk hesitate to send in any messages just in case
the elitist group (ie. those who use and know the acronyms) might find the
input tiresome. The last paragraph in your August 02 2007 message underlines
this perception.
An unfortunate result.Surely a compromise is to put the bird's name in full and then use the acronym for subsequent references - and this in every posting on the chat-line. I know Geoffrey has refused to do this and has stated his reasons - but I still send this plea for others to be less unforgiving and support readability over brevity. Janette Lenz |
