That is a very useful contribution. I'd even think
the stained excreta has nothing to do with it
being disturbed at its roost. Can't say I have ever seen the word
"mute" used like that but it is in the Concise Oxford Dictionary. That
website article sure is detailed.
The only suggestion that I would make, is that,
rather than have a short note for Canberra Bird Notes about Leo?s observation of the
bird eating, that a summary article goes in about the observations of all
concerned, from the first one, so that we get an in context description of the
record. In that regard I mention that Leo Berzins wrote to me (in amongst
other things) that "I do know Dick Schodde and have been talking to him about
it. He sees the owl nearly every day (he has an office at ANBG)." So there is
another potential source of expert opinion. Obviously, I'm just pointing this
out, I'm not committing him on anything.
