Ian, not sure why you've dismissed the red-capped
robin which is the bird which really makes this sound. I've certainly
recorded them several times (initially by call) at the top end of Dunrossil
Drive in spring, and Richard Allen has recently in neighbouring Curtin.
With the drought on and Pied Butcherbirds being seen, it should be no surprise
to have red-capped robin in Canberra suburbs.
