While I was living in Flynn, there were a number of birds that made these calls. I found them to be Common Blackbirds. Very annoying to be fooled by a bird into thinking the phone was actually ringing. It got me at least once a year, every year

Ian, not sure why you've dismissed the red-capped robin which is the bird which really makes this sound.  I've certainly recorded them several times (initially by call) at the top end of Dunrossil Drive in spring, and Richard Allen has recently in neighbouring Curtin.  With the drought on and Pied Butcherbirds being seen, it should be no surprise to have red-capped robin in Canberra suburbs.
