Curious picture. Would have been nice to know the longer story. The magpie may well have been considering predation but it is hardly their usual style. The behaviour described is the sort of thing that Ravens would do as predation. Most of the attacks on other birds by Magpies that I am aware of, are in-flight chasing and some of these are for predation. But that is irrelevant as ducklings can't fly yet. It could be play or curiosity by the maggie.
