Julienne, I would suggest that you do not need to be there particularly
early...I think they are more active once the sun is up and the day warms
up a bit.
Ian, I'm no bushlark expert (so should probably keep my mouth shut!) but
aren't short tail and wings also features of the adult?  The only
fieldguide I have to hand (Pizzey) talks about immatures having "wider
more conspicuous pale margins to wing feathers" - I hate those sort of
'comparative' features which require you, either to be very familiar with
the species, or to be able to compare it with, in this case, an adult!
Just a thought...I'm sure somebody will put me back in my box...
