With regards to the warranty issue, when my wife got her pair of binoculars
(not Zeiss) in Australia the stated warranty was 10 years compared to the
life time I had been offered for the same brand in New York a few years
earlier.  However the salesperson said this was only because EU rules now
prohibited a longer time on grounds along the lines of "You don't know what
will be the situation in a longer time."   I was assured that they'd look
after me if something went wrong later.
