Published sightings for the week ending 1 Aug 2010.

Sun 1 Aug Wedge-tailed Eagle Budderoo National Park (Budderoo
Plateau)
I spent two hours on the Plateau at Budderoo NP this afternoon. As soon
as I started walking the Budderoo Track, I heard a Peregrine Falcon's
call above me. Looking up, I found the Falcon harassing a Wedge-tailed
Eagle. The Eagle folded its wings and it fell into a swoop, with the
Peregrine doing the same, pursuing the Eagle angrily. Both birds
disappeared over the horizon. Spectacular stuff - something I've never
seen. There were very few sightings of other birds on the Plateau due to
blowy conditions. An Eastern Bristlebird was heard calling (and, I
thought, imitating a Grey Shrike-thrush; the literature doesn't seem to
say Bristlebirds copy other bird calls; maybe, I was mistaken). A few
Southern Emu-wrens were also heard, but not seen. A pair of Gang-gang
Cockatoos were seen huddled in a swaying, wind-swept gum at the southern
end of the track.

Sat 31 Jul Gang Gang Cockatoo, Little Eagle, Pacific Baza, Crested
Shrike-tit Quorrobolong & Ellalong, Cessnock area
21 members of the Central Coast Group of Birding NSW had a wet and windy
day out in the Cessnock area at Quorrobolong & Ellalong and saw 80
species. The highlights were a pair of Pacific Bazas, 2 Rose Robins, a
flock of 45 Choughs and 5 groups of Grey-crowned Babblers, 1 group
feeding 2 young, all seen along Sandy Creek Rd Quorrobolong. On a
private property, were 6 Gang Gangs & 3 Crested Shrike-tits, with 2
Little Eagles and a Brown Falcon nearby. At Ellalong Lagoon, Hobby,
Whistling Kite, Wedge-tail & Sea-Eagle and on another private property a
Wedge-tailed Eagle & a Collared Sparrowhawk, while there was a
Black-shouldered Kite at Mulbring.

Fri 30 Jul Spotted Quail-thrush, Grey Currawong Blue Gum Swamp
Creek, Winmalee (in the Blue Mountains)
I had a good morning's birding at Blue Gum Swamp in Winmalee today.
Highlights include a pair of Spotted Quail-thrush, a pair of Pilotbirds,
a pair of Rock Warblers, several Red-browed Treecreepers and heard a
Grey Currawong calling a number of times.

Brolga Hastings River Drive, Port Macquarie
2 Brolga seen at 8:15 am 400 m WSW of Fernbank Creek bridge after the
rain over the last few days, in the usual spot.
Ian Kerr

Bar-shouldered Dove, Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo Red Hill in
the Cromer-Beacon Hill area
I've heard the Bar-shouldered dove a few times here, but only managed to
ID it today. Saw one yellow-tailed Black-cockatoo but there are quite a
few around the Dee-Why, Beacon Hill, Cromer area at the moment.

Thu 29 Jul Australian King-Parrot and Golden Whistler Concord
Foreshore Walk (Yaralla)
A pair of King Parrots and a female plumaged Golden Whistler were my
first sightings in Canada Bay LGA and a first for King Parrot in the
inner west.

Wed 28 Jul Brolga 20km west of Condobolin
Finished off a trip out west by a visit to Round Hill NR - the rain had
made the road through the reserve impassable but nice sightings of
Speckled Warblers, Crested Bellbird, Splendid Fairy-wrens and
White-winged Trillers by the roadside just after Round Hill. Then down
near the Lachlan River, a Striped Honeyeater in the trees along the
riverbank, a pair of Spotted Harriers hunting over the field opposite
and a bit further along the road a Brolga quietly feeding by the
roadside.
Robert Griffin

        Pink-eared Duck Lawrence near Maclean
Spotted the Pink-eared Duck swimming in a wetland in Lawrence. Another
one appeared and they swam together also in the wetland were Hardheads,
Chestnut Teal, White Breasted Woodswallow, Pacific Black Duck and Purple
Swamphen.
Richard, Karen and Jackson Hagley

        Sacred Kingfisher Concord
One in the mangroves near Kokoda Memorial Trail. Also a Yellow-rumped
Thornbill near the RSL. (Moderators Note: Sometimes immature Sacred
Kingfishers winter in mangroves or in heaviliy vegetated freshwater
wetlands instead of migrating northwards).
Dion Hobcroft

Tue 27 Jul Barking Owl Cremorne Point, Sydney
I found this barking owl just off the walking track at Cremorne Point.
It was on the eastern side of the track in some dense bush (but only a
couple of meters off the track) about 50m from where the track ends. It
was causing huge consternation amongst the crow population of Cremorne
Point although most of the local joggers weren't too concerned!
Richard Field

Flame and Scarlet Robins, Diamond Firetails Megalong Valley and
Shipley's Plateau - Blue Mountains, NSW
I had some good birding today in the Megalong Valley and Shipley's
Plateau in the Blue Mountains. Some of the highlight birds included at
least 2 male Flame Robins as well as at least 2 pairs of Scarlet Robins,
Red-browed Tree-creeper, Bassian Thrush, Gang-gang Cockatoos, 10 Diamond
Firetails and Crescent Honeyeater. One of my best moments was when I
squeaked and I then had all these small birds (Diamond Firetails,
Yellow-rumped Thornbills and Blue Wrens) hop on some rocks a few metres
in front of me. I certainly love this part of the Blue Mountains.
Edwin Vella

Peregrine Falcon Moore Park, Surry Hills
A male (from size) came flying past at full pelt this morning only a
metre off the ground, chasing three Crested Pigeons. Vanished from sight
before I had time to see the outcome, but I respotted it a minute later
without any prey. Flew off towards Centennial Park.
Ashwin Rudder

Sun 25 Jul Musk Lorikeet Moore Park, Sydney
Pair of birds flying over Moore Park towards Centennial Park/Randwick.

Eric Finley

Red-rumped Parrot Rouse Hill, nw Sydney
Loose flock of 32 birds, quite a good sized group for Sydney. Feeding on
lawns at Castlebrook Cemetery, a favourite location for this species.
