I remember about four years ago being astonished when I overheard a woman
at the Melbourne Botanic Gardens tell her son a Silver Gull was a pigeon!

A few years ago I was on a sightseeing ferry trip on Newcastle Harbour. As
we passed the Kooragang Dykes at high tide the Captain/guide drew our
attention to the birds roosting thereon. He explained the importance of the
area to both local and migratory birds, pointing out different species as we

neared them. His mention of a Mexican Plover had me scrambling for the
binoculars, until he directed our attention to a small group of Sooty
Oystercatchers.
