Hi,

I was unaware until someone pointed this out, but there is a separate schedule which covers telescopes and binoculars, which indicates that there is zero duty on these items, although you still need to pay for GST on items over $1000. On items which attract duty, the duty is on the cost overseas in A$. GST is on the cost + duty + transport.

Cheers

Andrew

Useful information. Someone asked me about buying binoculars overseas and I had to admit I didn't know what, if any, import or duty there would be - does the duty free allowance apply to products purchased and sent from overseas? From what you say it doesn't. Is the import tax and the GST cumulative, one on top of the other, or are they calculated separately on the purchase price?
